This remarkable individual escaped a hostile homophobic home life to flourish as a national LGBTQ+ leader. From LGBT+ advocacy against a backdrop of Section 28 in the 1980's, to saving and enhancing the lives of countless young people, Sally Carr MBE has dedicated her life to improving outcomes for LGBTQ+ young people for over 35 year.
Sally started volunteering at the gay youth group in 1988 and then set up the Peer Support Project in 1996, a charity offering intensive support for LGBT+ young people, this manifested into her founding LGBT Youth North West in 2005, which developed into the The Proud Trust, which she founded in 2015.
In 2021 Sally convened the Pride Road Collective, an organisation which supports Gypsy, Romany and Traveller organisations to develop inclusive practices for LGBTQ+ community members.
Sally was awarded a MBE in 2012 for services supporting vulnerable and isolated LGBT+ young people across the UK. She has been shortlisted for the Life Time Achievement Awards at the National Diversity Awards 2021 and nominated in the 2021 and 2022 Inspirational Women Awards, and previously in the top ten for the British LGBT Awards 2020 Outstanding Contribution to LGBT+ life.
Alongside her support of young people,
Sally has also co-developed community initiatives and networks to support teams and influence policy. Her dedication to young people's rights and voices over a staggering career has been unrelenting.
Sally is Director of Youth at Pride Sports, Trustee responsible for Safeguarding at the National Youth Agency, Patron of The Pankhurst Trust, Advisor to The Traveller Movement, Co-chair of the women and girls advisory panel for the Mayor of Greater Manchester (Andy Burnham), and a Director at StreetGames UK .
